Despite denials of wreckage being found in the sea off southern Vietnam the area appears to be a focus of search activity for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which vanished early today en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Aviation Herald had earlier reported an emergency beacon locator signal from the missing Malaysia Airlines 777-200 has been detected 20nm south of the coast of Ca Mau in Vietnam. However government sources have denied this is the case and the airline says it has no confirmed information concerning its location.
Flight MH370, went missing between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing with 239 people, including six Australians and two New Zealanders on board early this morning some two hours after departing from the Malaysia capital's international airport at 12.40 am.
It was due in Beijing at 6.30 a local time after a flight scheduled to last five hours 50 minutes.
The beacon signal report was consistent with a location in or near Vietnam after contact was lost.
Other elements of the reports coming from China are that the aircraft was noticed to be in a steep decent moments before it disappeared, however there are reports that it vanished almost instantly from ATC radar, which would imply a violent disintegration.
It is important to keep an open mind at this early stage of the search for the crash site. There is a high probability that the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder will be retrieved and read upon their discovery. That should quickly determine if this is a criminal investigation, or a mechanical or systems failure.
The 777 has an outstandingly good safety record. The only previous crash occurred at San Francisco airport, when an Asiana Airlines flight crashed onto runway after an unstable approach last July, causing two fatalities and leading to a third passenger being killed by a rescue vehicle after escaping from the burning jet.
As reported earlier According to Flightaware (see screen grab below) the last plotted position of the jet was comparatively close to Kuala Lumpur but the flight tracker displayed only the first 18 minutes of data.
